Question 92: (May 23rd, 2015) Answer

Answer:12.35%.
Let us assume 'b' is the base of the triangle and 'h' is the altitude of the triangle.
So the area of the triangle is (1/2) bh.
If the base is increased by 7%, the new base would be 1.07b.
Similarly if the altitude is increased by 5%, the new altitude would be 1.05h.
The new area is (1/2) (1.07b)(1.05h) = (1/2) (1.1235)bh.
So the increase in area = (1/2) (1.1235)bh - (1/2) bh
= (1/2) bh [1.1235 - 1]
= (1/2) bh [0.1235]
Percentage increase in area = [Increase in area/Original area] x 100
= [(1/2) bh (0.1235)/ (1/2) bh] x 100
= [0.1235] x 100 = 12.35%
